MAKING HISTORY
ADDING MEANING TO OUR PRACTICE - HERE ARE A FEW PAGES IN OUR HISTORY
WEEKLY STONE CLUB
For 2 years now, we have been meeting weekly at The Commando Temple to lift stones, encourage each other, and push our limits.
The London Stone Club is the first, and only of its kind in the City - bringing the ancient art of stonelifting to an urban environment.
Together we have shared in each member hitting personal achievements and celebrated the many victories in a positive space. It doesn’t matter who your age, gender, ability or background - all are welcome!
TRAFALGAR SQUARE
We featured in The Triumph of Art , a nationwide public artwork and celebration created by Jeremy Deller as part of the National Gallery’s Bicentenary programme. The project culminated in a large-scale public event in Trafalgar Square. We demonstrated the ancient practice of stone lifting to thousands of spectators, culminating in a large performance in the centre of the square.
IRELAND STONE TOUR
We ran an expedition to the west coast of Ireland to tackle a variety of historical, legendary lifting stones over the course of three days. This area is notorious for its particularly heavy stones, averaging 170kg each. We lifted everything we set out to, including the famous Liam O’ Flaherty stone on Inishmoor. Many pints of Guinness were consumed that evening!
THE PEAK DISTRICT DINNIES
Few people have lifted the Peak District Dinnie Stones.
With a combined weight of over 350kg, held on thin iron rings - its easy to understand why. Flesh and bone is put under huge stress. It is not for the feint of heart.
London Stone Lifting boasts three lifters of these formidable stones.
INDIANA STONES
We hosted the legendary Stone Lifter David ‘Indiana Stones’ Keohan for the English premiere of his Film ‘Made in Stone’ along with the Director Will Hutchby.
David is responsible for the resurgence of the Irish Culture of Stone Lifting and has found (and lifted) over 50 historical artefacts.
After viewing the film - we had an epic 20 strong stone lifting session!
‘YES BOYS’ Television advert for ee
Recorded to demonstrate a healthy, positive outlet for young men. The advert seeks to combat the toxic nature of the ‘Manosphere’ and reflects many of the principles found in stone lifting.
The advert features members of our stone club encouraging young Sam to follow in the example and lift a huge stone. A simple, honest portrayal of the supportive, community driven nature of what we do.
It was fantastic to spend a day on set and see the incredible footage that was made.
TEMPLES STRONGEST
Every year, The Commando Temples Strongest competition features the tools of our trade - Natural Stones, Atlas Stones and Sandbags.
We see people from all walks of life tackling these objects in a variety of ways and the events are always a favourite.
All of this is further proof in the effectivness and utility in stones building real world strength.
