THE TEMPLE GAUNTLET

LONDONS STONE LIFTING CHALLENGE : AN ESSENTIAL VISIT FOR ANY LIFTER VISITING THE CAPITAL

WHAT IS THE GAUNTLET?

The Gauntlet at The Commando Temple is a series of stone challenges designed to test every aspect of traditional stonelifting—not just brute strength, but technique, grit, and adaptability.

The Gauntlet is built around natural, awkwardly shaped stones, each with its own personality.

Every stone presents a different problem:

  • Different diameters and centres of gravity.

  • Smooth, rough, or irregular surfaces.

  • Minimal or awkward handholds.

  • Different loading positions (chest, shoulder or overhead, carry, ring pick up).

Unlike modern strongman events, which often standardise equipment, the Gauntlet embraces the traditional stonelifting philosophy that every stone is unique. Success comes from learning how to solve the puzzle each stone presents, mirroring historic lifting traditions from places like Scotland, Iceland and Ireland.

The Gauntlet is difficult, only experienced stonelifters will be able to complete it. However, it is also an ideal that ANYONE can work toward. We have a vast collection of stones, so you can find out where you are in relation to the challenge and work your way up until you achieve it. EVERY stone is a landmark for the individual - by striving for the Gauntlet, you will experience the highs of stonelifting, embrace the culture, and become your strongest self.

  • Master a specific stone.

  • Learn new techniques.

  • Build a progression that keeps you coming back.

  • Earn recognition within the community as they complete each stage.

LIFT 2 - 115KG ‘BRAZIL STONE’ TO SHOULDER

At 115 kg, this is a serious stone, but what really makes it memorable isn't just the weight—it's the size. The Brazil Stone is large for its mass, forcing you to wrap yourself around it in a way that demands both strength and technique.

LIFT 3 - 139KG ‘BELAS STONE’ CARRY FOR 40m

Getting the stone into a secure carrying position is a challenge in itself. You might lap it. You might chest it. But settling it high enough, securely enough and tightly enough that you can wrap your arms around it and move with confidence is an entirely different problem.

LIFT 4 - 149 ‘WALNUT STONE’ TO CHEST

If you can confidently chest the Walnut regardless of how it's lying, you'll develop the kind of instinct and adaptability that transfers to almost every natural stone in the 150 kg range. At that point, you're no longer just lifting one stone—you've learned how to lift awkward stones.

LIFT 5 - 151KG ‘TRAFALGAR STONE’ TO CHEST

For many stone lifters, 150 kg is a benchmark. It's the point where natural stones stop feeling merely heavy and start demanding genuine mastery. Crossing that threshold is a badge of honour, and the Trafalgar Stone is your first opportunity to prove you belong there.

LIFT 6 - 183KG ‘DELILAH STONE’ PICK UP

At 183 kilograms, Delilah sits in a different league. Weight alone doesn't tell the whole story, though. Like all great natural stones, she's far greater than the sum of the number painted on her.
